Taicang, lies in the southeast of Jiangsu province and south bank of the mouth of Yangtze River, approaching to Shanghai in the south. It covers an area of 822.9 sq.km. and houses around 460,000 people.
Compared with other cities nearby, Taicang is more like a big town other than a city. It was a small village less than 100 people in the ancient time. During the Spring and Autumn Period, it belonged to Wu state. In Yuan dynasty, the central government developed the ocean transportation and Taicang became an important port. Since then, Taicang prospered rapidly and developed into a big town. Liujia Harbor in Taicang was even considered as The First Harbor in ancient China.
Besides, Taicang is famous for the private gardens, classic opera, ancient academy and stone bridges. It is a small but lovely and beautiful city. No rush time! No skyscrapers! Everything here is harmonious, ordinary and elegant. |
