  Xinjiang is the largest Chinese administrative division and spans over 1.6 million km2. Xinjiang borders Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, has abundant oil reserves and is China's largest natural gas-producing region.


  Xinjiang was previously known as Xiyu (西域)or Qurighar meaning Western Region , under the Han Dynasty , which drove the Xiongnu empire out of the region in 60 BC. This was in an effort to secure the profitable Silk Road. It is home to a number of different ethnic groups including the Uyghur, Han, Kazakh, Hui, Kyrgyz and Mongol. There are over a dozen autonomous prefectures and counties for various minorities living in Xinjiang.


  The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region accounts for more than a sixth of China's total territory. With a population of 17 million, it has very rich tourism resources and a great potential for developing its tourism industry.


  Xinjiang's tourism resources are vast both in quantity and variety. In Xinjiang, one can find the driest, hottest, and coldest places in all of China. It also has China's longest continental river, lowest lowland, largest inland lake, and largest desert. The Silk Road across the region is famous worldwide. Xinjiang has always been home to diverse ethnic groups and cultures. Their life style, culture, and folk art customs and festivals have strong ethnic characteristics. Xinjiang has enjoyed the fame of being the hometown of fruits and melons. It is also famous for its gold, jade and carpet products.
