Sacred Heart Cathedral of Guangzhou

    The Sacred Heart Cathedral is located in Yide Road in Guangzhou near the Pearl River. Built in 1863 and completed in 1888, the Sacred Cathedral is of more than 100 years. As all the church walls and pillars are made of granite stone, it is also known as the “Sarcophagus” or “Sarcophagus Sacred Heart of Jesus Church” and “Sarcophagus Catholic Church”. With its magnificent arches and tall towers, the cathedral is the most distinctive in Guangzhou.

    The total area of the church building is 2754 square meters, 35 meters from east to west and 78.69 meters from north to south. It is one of the oldest existing Gothic architectures and can be comparable to Notre Dame de Paris. The distinctive feature makes it a typical European medieval catholic church in Asia.
