Jiaxing

Memories about Jiaxing as a famous historical and cultural city are kept in ancient books, deposited in deep layers of the fertile soil and engraved in great land of splendors.

Ever since its time of the remotely ancient Majiabang Culture to the later recorded historic ages, this range of land impresses people as having special blessings from Heaven. It has elegant grand terraces where people have witnessed the misty rains of different eras. It has also productive fields that have brought people the joy of harvest year after year. "Apricot blossoms, spring rains, the South of the river Yangtze".

During the chaotic Eastern Zhou(770 BC-256 BC)period, the two kingdoms of Wu and Yue, as many others did elsewhere, fought for supremacy upon the southeastern region of the country. History carries the record on their battles fought in Zhuili. During the long ages of the Three Kingdoms(220-280 A.D.), the Western and Eastern Jin Dynasties(265 - 420 A.D.), and the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms(907-979 A.D.), the Central Plains of China were repeatedly swept by troops and wars while people of Jiaxing enjoyed peace and order in their life. In the Southern Song Dynasty(1127-1279 A.D.)when the royal regime retreated from the aggressive invasions of the Jin in the north of China and made a temporary settlement in the southeastern part of the country, Jiaxing, an area of strategic importance located to the northeast of the new capital city, got an opportunity to rise again. Throughout history, the land has gone through calamities of wars and disaster, but more importantly it has experienced rejuvenation and growth. People of Jiaxing have never stopped exploring their new frontiers. Their homeland has been well known as a place of abundant fish and rice,far-famed for its silk production, and comparable to the two neighboring cities of Suzhou and Hangzhou in the craftsmanship of different fields of work. The leading role in the development of economy and culture has often pushed it to the forefront of social transformation. The "Red Boat" that set sail on the South Lake in the early 20s of the 20th Century added to its history a stroke of the most glorious color.
